Zittauer Marktplatz becomes the stage for Romeo & Julia 2026!

In 2026, a performance of "Romeo & Julia" will take place on the historic marketplace in Zittau. This decision was made because the Waldbühne Jonsdorf will be rebuilt after the current season. For the staging, a separate version of the classic is developed, which was specially designed for this location. A grandstand with 600 seats is being built, which enables a look at the town hall. The city of Zittau and the theater currently coordinate the exact period for structure, rehearsals and performances in order not to disturb the operation and traffic flow on the market square. During the theater performances, some events such as the weekly or Samsmarkt are moved to neighboring areas.

"Romeo & Julia" is performed as part of the Saxon Theater Meeting, which takes place in Leipzig from May 21 to 26. The story revolves around the central conflict between two hostile families. Romeo and Julia, the children of these families, fall in love with a festival. Despite the dispute of their parents, they secretly marry, which gives hope for a possible reconciliation of families. However, Julia's upcoming marriage obligation stands in the way and leads to dramatic twists when Romeo is involved and banished. These crucial moments are implemented in an innovative manner in the staging, which Pia Richter staged.
