Something is happening in Cologne in the area of small slaughterhouses. Wolfram Günther, agricultural policy spokesman for Bündnis90/Die Grünen, has repeatedly advocated a reduction in meat hygiene fees in recent days. This initiative is no coincidence, as smaller slaughterhouses are under more pressure than ever. They are not only fighting for survival, but also for fair conditions in the industry. Bauernzeitung reports that Günther put this issue on the agenda as Agriculture Minister, but did not receive a positive response from the Ministry of Social Affairs.
“Reducing fees is a good step,” says Günther, who warns, however, that it is not enough to solve the complex problems of small slaughterhouses. The agricultural policy spokesman is clear: the challenges should not be reduced to just one aspect. The fees are just part of the larger problem plaguing regional food artisans. That's why his group is working on a comprehensive proposal that seeks various improvements for the industry.
