Blood donations urgently needed: save lives now in the summer!
The warm season has not only attracted sun worshipers on vacation, but also brings with it a special challenge for blood donation services. Midsummer temperatures and the upcoming holiday season mean that fewer people are willing to donate blood. At the same time, the need for blood supplies is increasing, which is making the situation for the blood bank at Leipzig University Hospital (UKL) tense. According to Prof. Dr. Reinhard Henschler, director of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine, says now is the ideal time to donate blood, especially after the hot days of June depressed donation numbers. Many regular donors are on vacation, which could lead to shortages if enough new donors are not mobilized soon.
Why is blood donation so important now? Blood reserves are essential for a variety of medical procedures - from operations to transplants to obstetrics. A shortage could result in critical procedures having to be postponed. Even when temperatures are high, it is not dangerous to donate blood as long as you feel fit. A health check is carried out in advance, during which blood pressure, pulse and body temperature are measured. Anyone who is unsure whether he or she can donate should not hesitate to consult the blood bank team.
Blood donation as vital support
The need for regular blood donations is not a temporary phenomenon. Particularly important blood donations benefit people with chronic illnesses such as cancer and are of great importance for patients on heart-lung machines. Demographic change is increasing the need for blood supplies - the number of older people, who often donate more, is increasing, while the number of younger people donating is decreasing. This means that more and more calls for blood donations are necessary to ensure availability.
Holiday periods also put a strain on the willingness to donate: The German Red Cross (DRK) service reported that the number of first-time donors fell in 2024 compared to 2023 - a decline of 6%. This is an alarm signal, as blood supplies are needed every day, especially in the hot summer months, when more accidents often occur.
How generous can donors be?
Anyone who plans to become a blood donor has the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing ice cream when donating and to take part in a competition if they bring new donors with them. The requirements are simple: at least 18 years old, more than 50 kg and in good health. It is also important to bring your ID card with you.
