Elephant mom Rani and daughter Savani: New phase of life in Munich!
Leipzig, Deutschland - Rani and her daughter Savani, two Asian elephants, have started a new phase of life in the Hellabrunn zoo in Munich. Her move, which took place on May 20, 2025 with a special van, came on the recommendation of the European conservation breeding program (EEP). The aim of this move is to build its own matril line in Munich, as Rani had problems with integration into the existing herd in her old home in Leipzig Zoo. Tensions with other elephants, especially the Kewa Kewa, meant that Rani and Savani were often separated from the herd. The social needs of the two animals were not optimally met in the long run, which made the decision necessary for a move, according to Zoo Leipzig [thueringingen24.de]
The transport to Munich was consistently positive. Rani and Savani were able to explore their new home in peace, and familiar caregivers accompanied the two on their move. The Munich carers emphasize that the two elephants are gradually used to their new surroundings in order to keep the stress as low as possible. The careful settlement comes first, as zoo director Rasem Baban explains [zoo-leipzig.de].
a new home in the Hellabrunner elephant group
In Hellabrunn, Rani and Savani already have new step -siblings in the elephant group, which also includes the Bulle Gajendra and the elephants Otto, Temi and Mangala. The Munich carers are optimistic that Rani, who is only 15 years old, will spend a happy time in their new home. Gajendra is already interested in Rani, which feeds the hope that she could soon get new young animals. Nurses and zoole management express the desire that Rani will even become grandma in the future when her daughter Savani is older [sueddeutsche.de].The situation in Leipzig has changed for everyone involved. Rani now has the opportunity to take care of her two daughters, which is common in herds of elephant, since all cows provide the young animals together. In the MDR documentary soap "Elefant, Tiger & Co", the familiarization of Rani and Savani is documented, and the latest episode shows Bulle Otto, who gently approaches the two females [thueringen24.de]
