Leipzig celebrates CSD: 20,000 participants at the colorful street festival!
Things will really get going in Leipzig next Saturday, June 28, 2025, because that's when the highlight of this year's CSD week will take place. Under the motto “We’re staying here!” Around 20,000 people are expected to raise their voices for love and diversity. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. on Augustusplatz with a rally that marks the start of a large demonstration.
From 1:00 p.m. the parade will move back to the city via Prager Straße, Zentrum-Südost, Bayerischer Platz and Leuschnerplatz. At 4:00 p.m. at the latest, the street festival takes place at Augustusplatz, where important social issues are not only celebrated, but also addressed. A highlight is the awarding of the prize for queer commitment to Ingo Günther, who has been committed to the queer community in Leipzig for over 30 years and has launched numerous projects. This commitment is therefore given the recognition it deserves.
Traffic restrictions and arrival
The city administration had already ensured the necessary security and organization in advance. On Augustusplatz, the central lanes will be closed from 9:00 a.m. to around 8:00 p.m., which means that trams and cars cannot get through here. However, for guests arriving by car, access to the Augustusplatz underground car park is possible via Goethestrasse. Anyone who wants to use public transport should note that there may be restrictions on public transport and on the streets in the city center as a result of the demonstration. It is recommended to use stops such as Hauptbahnhof, Markt, Johannissplatz and Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz, as these are also barrier-free. We also advise against driving directly to Augustusplatz on the day of the demonstration; Better options are parking outside the city center and using public transport or taking a nice walk.
A celebration for everyone
Christopher Street Day in Leipzig has been taking place since 1992 and commemorates the Stonewall riots of 1969 in New York. These celebrations, which began with the traditional raising of the rainbow flag at the New Town Hall, are intended to celebrate the values of love, diversity and unity. The central importance of Augustusplatz is undeniable, because here the rally, demonstration and street festival come together to form a colorful coexistence. The square is easy to reach for people with mobility impairments, including wheelchair users, as several barrier-free tram lines lead there.
There is great anticipation for the CSD in Leipzig, and the atmosphere promises to be lively and colorful. The organizers also agree: “Something is happening!” This will be a day that no one will soon forget.
