Leipzig celebrates CSD 2025: 20,000 people send a strong signal!
Today, June 28, 2025, Leipzig is the place where the queer community will reunite to celebrate Christopher Street Day (CSD) and demonstrate against discrimination. Under the motto “We’re staying here!” A total of around 20,000 people are expected to celebrate their identity and their rights. The starting shot will be given at 11:30 a.m. with a rally in front of the opera on Augustusplatz, where the two moderators Lili Alexander and Oliver Viehweg will take the floor. The well-known musician Sebastian Krumbiegel acts as an ambassador, who also wants to raise awareness of the concerns of the queer community, such as lvz.de reported.
The big demonstration starts at 1:00 p.m. and is expected back at Augustusplatz around 4:00 p.m. On their way through the city, the participants are supported by 24 initiatives, groups, companies and parties, including queer representatives from companies such as DHL, Porsche, Ikea and Rewe as well as the Leipzig Ballet and the Devious Drag Maids.
The route of celebrations
The parade will take place through the following streets:
- Grimmaischer Steinweg
- Johannisplatz
- Prager Straße
- Ostplatz
- Johannisallee
- Straße des 18. Oktober
- Bayrischer Platz
- Grünewaldstraße
- Roßplatz
- Schillerstraße
- Petersstraße
- Markt
- Salzgässchen
- Reichsstraße
- Innenstadtring
- Willy-Brandt-Platz
- Goethestraße
The celebrations at Augustusplatz, including a street party, begin at 4:00 p.m. and are expected to end around 8:00 p.m. The weather is at its best today, with mid-summer temperatures around 30 degrees. To quench the participants' thirst, there are free water dispensers in Johannisallee and at the Bayerischer Bahnhof as well as at Augustusplatz.
Concerned about safety
The organizers have taken precautions with regard to security and did not expect counter-rallies like the one that occurred lvz.de informed. However, it is recommended that all participants arrive in groups. In addition, topics such as discrimination and safety are also very important on almost festive occasions. In recent years there has been a worrying increase in anti-queer crimes in Germany.
According to the Federal Association of Criminal Investigators (BKA), a total of 1,785 cases of hate crime against LGBTIQ* people were registered in 2023, which represents an enormous increase compared to previous years. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has therefore called for the consistent prosecution of this violence. The daily news points out the importance of not only punishing anti-queer crimes legally, but also raising awareness in society.
The CSD initiatives are actively committed to raising awareness of queer issues not only in society but also in law enforcement agencies. It is important that these issues are taken seriously and dealt with sustainably in order to enable a discrimination-free future. Since 2021, there have also been contact persons for queer issues at the Leipzig public prosecutor's office, which represents a first step in the right direction csd-leipzig.de reported.
Last but not least, the CSD Leipzig is still looking for volunteers who would like to help as stewards at the demonstration. There is a small thank you for those who help in the form of a place on the guest list for the Pride Ball. A great opportunity to be an active part of this important event!
