Leipzig's airport is becoming a logistics powerhouse: new air freight center!
Leipzig/Halle Airport will soon have a modern air freight center. The new building, which was negotiated with US company Realterm, is to be built on the former Amazon site and promises an impressive storage area of up to 45,000 square meters. This development marks a new milestone for Germany's second largest air cargo airport, which is considered a central logistics hub in Europe. The airport already processes around 1.4 million tons of cargo annually, and air cargo volume increased by 11.3 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year, reflecting continued demand. Thüringen24 reports on the strategic importance of this new project for the region.
The construction will not only expand capacity, but also increase the efficiency of air cargo movements. Thanks to direct access to the airside and a truck staging area, both aircraft and trucks can be linked together in a timely manner. This minimizes transfer times and enables effective handling of express, e-commerce and general freight operations, Realterm points out. In addition, the ideal conditions at the location are highlighted by Frank Pieper from Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG. These new functions could further profile Leipzig/Halle Airport as a hotspot for air freight companies and make optimal use of the existing infrastructure.
A strategic port for air cargo
Leipzig has excellent conditions to offer for air freight companies: There are no restrictions regarding slots or payload, and the 24/7 cargo operations offer modern customs clearance as well as dedicated specialists on site. This is supported by caasint's information, which highlights the strong political and economic supports for the airport's growth. The potential for sustainable development certainly exists here, especially given that air freight has been increasing steadily for years.
In a global context, air transport is more expensive than land or sea transport, but high-quality and time-critical products remain in particular demand. A look at global statistics shows that the world's largest cargo airport in 2024 was Hong Kong, followed by Shanghai and Memphis. Frankfurt Airport is considered Germany's freight hub, but has Leipzig/Halle in its sights for its expansionist approaches, as air freight traffic could increase significantly here.
Growth in the air freight market
In 2024 alone, large transport companies such as Kühne+Nagel and DHL Group were able to occupy the market and expand their capacities, with DSV expected to become the largest air freight forwarder in 2025 after taking over DB Schenker. This shows how much the industry is changing and how important investments like those at Leipzig/Halle Airport are. Such developments not only create jobs but also promote economic stability in the region.
It remains exciting to see how the new air freight center will develop. Realterm has established itself as a competent partner in the international logistics and air freight industry and shows that they have a good knack for sustainable projects. The region can look forward to a promising future in which Leipzig/Halle Airport can continue to live up to its reputation as a central logistics hub.
