Sachsisch in change: children discover a new generation of dialect!

Leipzig, Deutschland - In Saxony, an exciting linguistic development is currently being observed. Many children find that there is hardly any Saxon dialect in their area. A common question of the children is: "Why do they talk so weird?" This incomprehension shows that the traditional Saxon loses importance for the younger generation. The answer of her mothers that "so sounds Saxon", illustrates the discrepancy between the language habits of the different age groups. According to Simon Oppermann from the University of Leipzig, however, Saxon has not died out, it only changes. Old linguistic phenomena are less audible, while in cities such as Leipzig new regional linguistic elements arise that are often not identified as such.

The change in the dialect can be observed in urban areas, where the mobility and mixing of the population means that strongly pronounced dialects are spoken less frequently. A influx of people from other regions means that the dialect becomes impractical. Children who grow up with standard German are often no longer familiar with a strong dialect and do not adopt its characteristics. In contrast, the dialect is largely preserved in rural areas, where the population is often based over generations. Small -spacious language variants can better preserve in stable communities.

research at the TU Dresden

An important concern of the project is the need to hold the real language situation in order to counter prejudices and stigmatization. The research questions include, among other things, whether the Saxon language area is an exception in German -speaking countries and what differences in the cultural -historical knowledge of language are in the various regions of Saxony. An interesting aspect is the distinction of 21 dialects that were mapped in 1969 based on sound recordings. The results of this research were summarized on a special website and are open to the public.

The role of dialects in research

dialects not only play an important role in cultural identity in Saxony, but also in the entire German -speaking area. Research on dialects aims to record and appreciate their meaning and diverse facets. Students and researchers deal with the question of how dialects can be preserved and promoted in order to create a better understanding of regional language cultures. Further information on this can be viewed on the website of dialect research.

In summary, it can be said that the Saxon dialect is subject to changes, but is still a lively part of Saxon identity. While the young generation is experiencing other linguistic influences, the dialect remains more anchored in rural areas and thus represents a valuable legacy.
