Dramatic accident in Radebeul: 83-year-old seriously injured after tram use!
On November 7th, 2025 there was an unfortunate accident in Radebeul. An 83-year-old woman was seriously injured when she walked behind an approaching tram at the “Wasastraße” stop. Tragically, she fell and then had to be taken to hospital. The investigation is ongoing to clarify whether there may have been previous contact with the tram, as the Sächsische Zeitung reports.
Unfortunately, such incidents are not isolated cases. Older people in particular are often seriously affected by road traffic. A current study by the Federal Statistical Office shows that in 2023, people aged 65 and over were the main cause of traffic accidents with personal injuries in 68.1% of cases. What is particularly alarming is that among those over 75, this proportion rises to 76.7%, which is the highest of all age groups.
Risk of injury to older road users
The numbers speak for themselves: Over 53,000 people aged 65 and over had accidents in road traffic last year, 1,071 of them lost their lives, while 11,485 suffered serious injuries. These statistics make it clear that older pedestrians are particularly at risk and are often unprotected in traffic.
What is particularly frightening is the probability of dying in an accident, which is significantly higher for people over 65, at 2.0% of those involved in an accident, than for the younger age group, where the figure is only 0.6%. The most common reason for accidents among older drivers is failure to yield right of way. This fact means that road safety for our older people urgently needs to be increased.
As the accident in Radebeul shows, the dangers in road traffic are omnipresent. Should such a tragedy occur, it remains to be hoped that such accidents can be minimized in the future through more education and targeted measures to ensure road safety.
