The fascination of the peep box: a look into the history of seeing!
What could be better than taking a look into the past? This opportunity will be offered at the Riesa Museum on Tuesday, June 24th at 5 p.m. The exciting lecture by Andreas Schöne, the managing director of the Society for the Promotion of the Frauenkirche Dresden e. V., is dedicated to the fascinating history of peep shows from the 18th and 19th centuries. A real highlight for everyone who is interested in what is special about visual media!
Peep boxes, which became popular in Europe in the mid-18th century, were not just simple viewing devices. This fairground attraction has much more to offer: they were one of the first forms of mass media and allowed people to experience exotic scenes or European sights live. Through a peep box you could experience optical illusions and impressive displays - very different from the magic lantern, where you saw projected images. Instead, you looked directly at prints, which were often done in lively gouache colors and – how exciting! – were produced in a median folio format of approximately 26 cm × 41 cm.
History and attractions
The presentation is not only characterized by historical reviews, but also includes a presentation of proscenium sheets with motifs from Dresden, which are made up of various collections. However, the topic of peep show is far from just theoretical, as during the lecture an audio document from the 20th century will be presented, which impressively reflects the ambience of a real peep show. This gives the listeners a feeling as if they themselves were part of the event.
But what exactly makes peep shows so special? These devices not only enjoy a high status in the nostalgia of viewers, but also offer the opportunity to immerse themselves in other worlds by viewing peep show images. Often made as engravings or etchings, these images depict everything from battles to natural disasters to biblical stories and classical myths.
From fascination to collection
The function of the peep showers, who were often war invalids or former sailors, was to bring these experiences closer to the audience. They allowed the general population to see images outside of churches and to engage with the magical world of art. This meant that the peep box was not only a means of entertainment, but also an important medium for the dissemination of images and stories that might otherwise never have seen the light of day.
For just 4 euros (reduced 3 euros), those interested can attend the lecture and purchase tickets at the museum box office in Riesa. Perhaps this will bring a new look at these unique pieces of history, which are made with great attention to detail and are very popular among collectors.
Be it the nostalgic splendor of past fairs or the technical sophistication of these early mass media - the lecture promises to be an exciting insight into the world of peep shows. So it's clear that on June 24th at the Riesa Museum not only history lovers will get their money's worth, but also everyone who has a good feel for visual experiences!
