Riesa fire department saves badger from a difficult situation – a blessing in disguise!

On Friday morning, August 15, 2025, the Riesa fire department was alerted to an unusual rescue operation. In the sewage treatment plant in Gröba, more precisely on Kirchstrasse, a badger fell into a shaft about six meters deep. Shortly before 9 a.m. the firefighters came out to help the poor animal out of its predicament. How Sächsische.de reports, a brave firefighter climbed into the sewage sludge, equipped with bite-resistant gloves and breathing protection. The uncertainty about possible toxic gases and the badger's behavior posed an additional challenge for the emergency services.

Luckily, the badger responded positively to the plastic box that was offered to him. After a successful rescue, the animal received a refreshing shower and fruit as a small reward for its courageous adventure story. After being cared for, the badger was released back into the wild, where he will hopefully find safe paths more often in the future. The Riesa fire department once again demonstrated its versatility, as it carries out several animal rescues every year and recorded a total of 14 missions in 2024. These were not least badger rescues, but also operations with deer and birds. Recently, two rescues due to lost ducklings were recorded in the city area.

The important tasks of the fire department

In addition to animal rescues, the Riesa fire department is also involved in apartment evacuation when it comes to bringing cats to safety. Despite the many challenges that can arise during such an operation, the team is always ready and well prepared to help animals and people in need.

While the fire department in Riesa is known for its rescue operations, there is also a lot going on in the food industry. In the first quarter of 2023, DoorDash reported strong growth in grocery orders and expanded partnerships with grocers. How Progressive Grocer reports, the company reported over 100% year-over-year growth in the U.S. grocery category. This is particularly notable as many consumers are eating more at home due to high inflation.

Despite a slight decline in the restaurant business due to increasing competition and changing eating habits, DoorDash remains strong in the grocery business, posting first-quarter revenue of $2.51 billion. CEO Tony Xu emphasizes that a focus on customer service is crucial to success in the grocery segment. DoorDash has not only expanded its services in recent months, but also announced new collaborations with retailers in various states.
