Großenhainer students create mosaics – a work of art for eternity!

Now the summer holidays are finally in sight! The students of the Großenhainer high school “Am Schacht” can look forward to a well-deserved break after creating an impressive mosaic for the entrance area to the schoolyard. With a lot of hard work and creativity, the participants in the all-day “Ceramics” program (GTA) created numerous small ceramic plaques that are decorated with motifs from their subjects and grade levels. As Sächsische reports, the aim of the project is to create a lively meeting point for the students.

The creative direction has been taken over by Rebekka Helbig, who has looked after the group once a week since 2020. This year she had around 17 motivated students who worked on the mosaic with great enthusiasm. The students developed their ideas for the works of art themselves, and all the motifs for the timeline were created without templates. The process included shaping, firing in the school's own kiln and coloring, which took a lot of time. The mosaic is now well attached and is already being admired by classmates. A refreshing ice cream from Rebekka Helbig awaits the hard-working artists as a reward.

Combining creativity and craftsmanship

The enthusiasm for artistic creation is also evident in other projects, such as the mosaic events, which serve as a balance to the digital and fast-moving environment. There, students not only learn the technique of mosaic design, but also how to use various materials and tools. These projects not only develop fine motor skills, perseverance and patience, but also provide the opportunity to strengthen creative thinking and teamwork. The Modesign website highlights that mosaic projects are a wonderful way to promote students' expressiveness and give them a sense of belonging.

It's no secret that art plays a crucial role in the educational landscape. As Art as Science states, integrating artistic activities into the classroom promotes the development of cognitive, emotional and social skills. By engaging with various art forms, students can not only express their feelings, but also develop empathy and realize their creative potential. The meaningful learning experiences these projects provide are invaluable to students of all ages.

An outlook on new projects

The next school year begins at “Am Schacht” in August and with it many new opportunities for creative projects. The experience and ideas of the previous students will be a valuable basis for many further mosaic and art projects. The close collaboration between teachers and students as well as the involvement of contemporary artists promise exciting experiences in the coming school year. The school therefore remains a place where creativity and community can be experienced. And who knows, maybe the next impressive work of art will come from the Großenhainer High School after the summer holidays!
