Mobility Day in Meißen: Glider pilots inspire students and citizens!
On Wednesday, September 18, 2025, everything in Meißen was about sustainable mobility. On the occasion of European Mobility Week, an exciting mobility day took place on Zscheilaer Straße, which attracted both locals and students. A special highlight was a glider pilot from the Riesa-Canitz glider club, who was available for the event and caused great enthusiasm among the children.
The initiative to organize the mobility day came from the Franziskaneum and the Freie Werkschule, who also requested a road closure at the foot of Zscheilaer Straße. This closure affected the section between the junction with Hafenstrasse and Zscheilaer Strasse, which caused some confusion among road users. Cars were excluded from the event for the day and had to take detours. Nevertheless, the organizers did not allow themselves to be deterred from offering numerous activities related to environmentally friendly mobility.
Insights into gliding
Students had the opportunity to test sit in the cockpit of the glider. Equipped with a rudder, compass, altimeter, airspeed indicator and a collision warning device, the glider pilot offered a fascinating overview of the world of flying. Frank Täubert, a teacher at the Franziskaneum and a member of the glider flying club, informed the young people about the training opportunities. Those interested can start gliding training at the age of 13, while they can fly at the age of 14 and can acquire a pilot's license at the age of 16.
European Mobility Week, launched by the European Commission, runs from September 16th to 22nd this year. The motto “Mix and Move! – climate-friendly mobile” is intended to motivate citizens to try out alternative transport solutions and to actively address the issue of environmental and climate protection. In this context, attention is also paid to the conversion of parking spaces and street spaces, as well as the inauguration of new footpaths and cycle paths.
National and international participation
The Mobility Day in Meißen is part of a larger initiative in which municipalities throughout Germany and Europe are invited to take part in campaigns to promote sustainable mobility. Companies and educational institutions can also take part in the mobility week. Registrations are possible until September 22, 2025 at the latest. Participation in this movement is supported by the National Coordination Office for Mobility Week in the Federal Environment Agency, which provides assistance, materials and organizational tips.
Overall, such events are becoming increasingly important, not only for the immediate area, but also at a European level. By incorporating innovative measures and the collaboration of various actors, the Mobility Week becomes a driving force in the area of sustainable mobility, as well as the European Commission underlined.
The contemporary issues surrounding mobility and the environment are the focus of attention not only in Meißen, but also in many other cities and promise exciting developments in the coming years.
