New green classroom in Coswig: learning in nature starts!

A special chapter will soon be opened in the West primary school in Coswig: a new green classroom will be available from the coming school year. This innovative outdoor learning environment is designed to strengthen connections with nature and promote environmental awareness among students. The old classroom building had to be demolished due to structural defects, but a solution was quickly found so that the students could learn outside in good weather in the future. That reports diesachsen.de.

Behind this project is the committed support association of the West Primary School, which has worked tirelessly for the new building. Through targeted fundraising campaigns and the solicitation of offers, we managed to collect the necessary funds. Another thank you goes to the city of Coswig, which covered half of the additional costs. In total, more than 10,000 euros flowed into this important project. Mayor Friederike Trommer thanked everyone involved, especially the support association and the building yard, for their great commitment.

Diverse support from the support association

The support association of the West Primary School not only took care of the new construction of the green classroom, but also many other projects that enrich school life. These include, among others:

  • Unterstützung der „Bewegten Schule“ durch Spiele und Geräte.
  • Versorgung für das leibliche Wohl bei jährlichen Schulfesten.
  • Klassengeschenke zu Weihnachten und Ostern.
  • Finanzielle Unterstützung für Abschlussfahrten und Projekttage.
  • Mitfinanzierung der Grundschulplaner (Hausaufgabenhefte).

Such activities help to strengthen a sense of community and make learning more attractive for children. For example, a trip to the Leipzig Zoo was organized in 2023 to offer the students an eventful children's day.

Education for sustainable development

The new green classroom is not only an asset to the school, but also fits into the larger context of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). ESD learning locations and activities can receive awards that recognize the commitment to environmental and sustainability education. These prizes have been awarded every two years since 2022 by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with the German UNESCO Commission. Those interested can find more information about these programs and funding opportunities at ESD portal.

Given the enormous importance of sustainability projects, the new classroom will not only function as a learning space, but also as an important step towards a more environmentally conscious future for the students of the West Elementary School. It remains to be hoped that such innovative ideas will find imitation in other schools and communities, because ultimately it is about the education of our little ones - and that is something that is important to all of us.
