Cycling in Meißen: 75% feel threatened! Urgent need for action!

In the city of Meißen, cycling is a big topic that affects many people. A recently published report by the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) shows that three quarters of cyclists there feel at risk when riding in traffic. These alarming numbers come from the current Bicycle Climate Test, which was carried out between September and November 2024 and has now been presented. Particularly interesting are the 57 percent of respondents who find driving in Meißen stressful.

The survey not only highlighted cyclists' safety concerns, but also the general mood on the road. An astonishing two thirds of the participants reported an aggressive mood that made everyday life on two wheels more difficult. The figures also show that only one in five of those surveyed said they were actually overtaken by cars at a sufficient distance. Conflicts with drivers seem to be the order of the day for 73 percent of cyclists. In contrast, 55 percent say they rarely have problems with other cyclists.

Lack of security and need for action

As the respondents make clear, there is room for improvement in many areas. 59 percent complain that the city of Meißen is not doing enough to ensure safe cycling, and 85 percent find the existing cycle paths often too narrow. This goes so far that almost half of those surveyed feel prevented from making rapid progress while cycling. Konrad Krause, managing director of ADFC Saxony, is therefore urgently calling for future-oriented transport planning.

The overall rating of the city of Meißen in the bicycle climate test is 4.16 on a scale of 1 to 6, which further illustrates the situation. Compared to other Saxon cities, Meißen took 30th place out of 39 participating cities, which shows that there is still room for improvement.

Recognize the potential of cycling

But what does it actually look like in the rest of Germany? According to the analysis on the ADFC page, the share of cycling in various types of regions, such as regiopolises, could grow significantly in the coming years. This could help ensure that up to 63 percent of trips in these areas will be made by bike in the future - a potential that needs to be exploited!

The bicycle climate test aims to provide real-life feedback to traffic planners and political decision-makers. In this way, measures to improve the infrastructure can be initiated. In this sense, the results from Meißen are not only a picture of the mood, but also a clear call to action.

For the future, the city of Meißen must focus on improving cycle paths and increasing the safety of cyclists. This is the only way to truly exploit the potential of cycling in the region. Opportunities that the city should not let go to waste!
