Dream job of being a horse farmer: This is how training in Moritzburg works!
Living a dream: Lukas Pietzsch, 19 years old, has been training to become a horse farmer at the Moritzburg State Stud since 2023. As one of 35 apprentices in the Saxon stud administration - 12 of them in Moritzburg and the rest in the Graditz main stud - he has dedicated himself to the subject close to his heart: working with horses. He took this step despite his parents' initial reluctance and has been working ever since to learn a profession with a future. Sächsische reports that ...
The training is a personal matter for Lukas: his great-great-grandfather was a saddle master in Trakehnen before he fled to Saxony in 1945. This time, interested applicants have until November 15, 2023 to apply for a training position. Whether at the Moritzburg State Stud, where the focus is primarily on the care and maintenance of stallions as well as the breeding business in the EU insemination station, or at the Graditz Main Stud, where the herd of mares and young horses are looked after, the training offers a wide range of options. Further information can be found on the website of the Saxon Stud Administration.
A day in the life of a horse owner
Up early: Lukas’ day starts at 6 a.m. with work in the stables. Mucking out, feeding and caring for the horses are just some of the tasks that await him. The best thing about this job? Every day brings new challenges, depending on the horses' mood. Lukas had only started riding a year ago and is already showing great progress, as head saddle master Falk Sieber attests. Physical fitness is essential because the work is anything but easy.
But riding is not just work. The trainees take riding lessons almost every day to prepare for competitions. Lukas will take part in the stallion parades in August and present a display called “Hungarian Post”. Lukas knows an uneasy feeling before performances, but joy and thrills are always part of the experience.
