Traffic calming in Meißen: Künstlergasse becomes an oasis for pedestrians!
The city of Meißen will be carrying out a comprehensive examination of the traffic volume around Görnische Gasse in the coming weeks. To do this, the city commissioned the traffic planning office SVU from Dresden. The aim is to develop tailor-made suggestions for future, optimized traffic routing. This measure is related to the newly planned traffic-calmed area in Künstlergasse, which will extend from “Am Hundewinkel” to Schlossergasse.
The traffic-calmed zone should be secured by a bollard in order to increase the quality of stay in this area. The traffic planning office is using the current closure of state road 90 in Frauenhain to carry out traffic counts. From Monday, data will be collected at selected locations in the old town to enable a thorough analysis of traffic behavior. Cameras installed on lighting poles are used to collect anonymized data. These cameras can distinguish between pedestrians, cyclists and heavy and light traffic, but do not take photos of people or license plates. Die Sachsen has published further details on the traffic measures in Meißen.
Closures and diversions
The current traffic counts are just one of several structural measures in the region. State road 90 in Frauenhain has been closed since March 31, 2025 due to pipeline work until August 8, 2025. This closure impacts bus routes 461 and 462 that operate in the region. The stop “Gröditz, Großenhainer Str.” will no longer be served by all trips. A replacement stop was set up in Frauenhain near the cemetery. The Meißen Administrative Association provides further information on this.
But not only in Frauenhain, but also in Niederwartha, passengers have to adapt to changes. Due to the structural condition of the road bridge over the Rohrbahn, Friedrich-August-Straße will not be accessible for an indefinite period of time. There are no stops here and replacement stops have been set up for the affected bus routes.
Sustainable transport planning for the future
These measures are part of a larger plan to improve the municipal transport infrastructure. According to the Federal Environment Agency, traffic planning plays a crucial role in the quality of life in a city. Not only the different types of transport such as cars, trucks, buses and cycling are taken into account, but also the needs of citizens. This integrative planning is part of the urban development concept, which aims to achieve sustainable mobility and strengthen compact urban structures.
In view of the forecast population and mobility development, the need for a well-thought-out transport development plan is evident. It turns out that municipal transport development planning influences the quality of life by creating sufficient space for walking and cycling as well as relaxed lounges. In this respect, the transport transition is a central issue for Meißen and its surroundings.
Current developments show that the city is not only looking for short-term solutions, but is also pursuing a sustainable transport policy. Meißen wants to create a livable and lovable city for all citizens.
