Collecting apples for Ukraine: committed Hainichen residents help children!

In Striegistal-Mobendorf, a dedicated group of children, women and men recently collected apples to make an important contribution to supporting aid transport to Ukraine. The initiative was launched under the leadership of Uwe Anke, the mayor of Nossen and member of the Communitas Hainichen association. Anke, who himself has a lot of experience in shaking fruit trees, explained that his family used to run a fruit acceptance business. This campaign is not only intended to raise money for a good cause, but also to show solidarity. According to Sächsische.de, the association has already sent 35 tractor-trailers with relief supplies to the Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine sent to a crisis-hit country.

The campaign has achieved remarkable results. An impressive 5,500 kilograms of apples were collected in just two days. These apples were then transported to the container in Pappendorf, where an additional 10,000 kilograms were received from citizens. In total, an amount of around 1,500 euros was generated - a great success considering that only 9 cents were paid per kilogram of apples. “The willingness to donate is gradually decreasing,” said Thomas Kretschmann from the association, “but we have to develop new ideas in order to be able to continue to provide help.” At the moment we are still missing 300 euros to be able to organize the next aid transport, which is already planned for this year and is aimed particularly at children, families and seniors in Ukraine.

What's next?

The Communitas Hainichen association is still actively looking for donations in kind and money. These are accepted on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the donation warehouse at Naturbrennstoffe Kretschmann in Hainichen. Monetary donations are also welcome and can be dropped off at the warehouse against a receipt or transferred to the association's donation account (IBAN: DE54 8705 2000 3330 0100 01).

The humanitarian situation in Ukraine remains critical. Das Deutsche Rote Kreuz (DRK) ist mit 17 Mitarbeitenden vor Ort aktiv und arbeitet eng mit dem Ukrainischen Roten Kreuz zusammen. Relief efforts are comprehensive, ranging from the provision of shelter to food vouchers, particularly for internally displaced people. More and more people need support, which makes efforts to raise funds and donations even more urgent. The DRK regularly calls for compliance with international humanitarian law and calls for the protection of the civilian population and humanitarian aid workers in order to be able to provide effective assistance. The situation now requires immediate measures to improve the living conditions of those affected and to ensure sustainable humanitarian care, as stated on DRK.de.

In this context, it is encouraging to see that local communities like those in Striegistal are willing to come together and provide active help in times of crisis. Every apple collected is a step in the right direction to give a voice and help to people in need in Ukraine.
