Freiberg's streets under water: Storm week leaves chaos!

Yesterday evening thunderstorms brewed over Freiberg, bringing with them an enormous amount of rain. The heavy rain began around 8:30 p.m. and was estimated to bring between 60 and 100 liters per square meter per hour. This heavy rainfall led to flooded streets, parking lots and full cellars, but fortunately there were no injuries. Nevertheless, it was an impressive natural spectacle that presented the city with several challenges. The fire brigade was mobilized with 85 comrades and had to deal with a total of 140 missions by morning, most of which involved full basements. The fire alarm systems and vehicles standing in masses of water were also a big issue. For example, the batteries of over 18 cars had to be disconnected at the Bronze Snake, while two vehicles even burst into flames.

After the storm, Mayor Sven Krüger highlighted the need for flood protection and announced that construction work for a storage canal under Beethovenstrasse is planned for next year. This measure is intended to prevent major floods in the future. The civil engineering department is currently working on cleaning the streets and repairing the overloaded street gullies. Hüttenstrasse was particularly affected, as it had to be closed due to a landslide while the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) is busy clearing rubble.

Damage and measures

The effects of the heavy rain were visible everywhere. Water seeped into various facilities such as the “Pusteblume” daycare center and the Ohain School, and mud collected in the cemetery building. The KITA on Roter Weg also faces major challenges, as water and mud make the group room unusable. But the city is not letting up and has called up a crisis team to efficiently coordinate the damage repair.

“We have to take quick measures to repair the damage caused by the rain,” said Krüger. The city administration's engineers are also called upon; They have already announced some short-term repairs to restore the infrastructure. The Bronze Snake rain retention basin had overflowed, causing manhole covers to be pushed out and several danger points to be cordoned off.

Despite these challenges, Freiberg continues to live and looks to the future with confidence. The city is known for learning from experiences and constantly strengthening itself.
