In the middle of ongoing digitization in many administrative areas, the driving license authority of the district of Mittelachsen is not still. Old driver's licenses, such as the paper driver's license and card guide notes, which were issued before January 19, 2013, must be exchanged into a new EU card license. This is prescribed by law because the old driver's licenses gradually lose their validity. The deadlines for the exchange are staggered:
- for paper guide notes:
- exhibited until December 31, 1998: before 1953 to January 19, 2033, 1953-1958: already expired, 1959-1964: already expired, 1965-1970: already expired, from 1971 to January 19, 2025.
- for card leaders:
- exhibited between January 1, 1999 and January 18, 2013: 1999-2001: already expired, 2002-2004: already expired, 2005-2007: already expired, 2008-2010 to January 19, 2025, 2011-2013 to January 19, 2026.
The required documents for the exchange are a valid ID document, the current driver's license and a biometric photo in paper form. Important note: digital passport photos are currently not being processed. In addition, the additional documents for the exchange of the paper driver's license should not be forgotten - this includes e.g. the index card.
The EU reform of the driver's license rules
These reforms are part of a more comprehensive traffic safety package, which was presented in March 2023. Member States now have the task of transferring these requirements to national law within four years in order to finally reach the desired “Vision Zero” by 2050 - that is, zero. The EU Commission will begin the development of technical standards after the reform comes into force in the next 12 months.
