Daycare centers under pressure: demographic crisis forces changes!

On Monday, August 11th, the youth welfare committee in the Central Saxony district met and highlighted important topics relating to daycare needs planning and the promotion of the district fire brigade association. In view of worrying demographic changes, the district is faced with the challenge of ensuring the quality and availability of childcare places. Loud landkreis-mittelsachsen.de The decision was made to continue the daycare needs plan until the end of the kindergarten and school year 2026/2027.

The current status is alarming: There are currently 272 facilities in the district that offer a total of 26,793 places in crèches, kindergartens and after-school care centers. But demographic change is making itself felt. From 1990 to 2022, the number of births fell from over 4,120 to just 1,656, while planning for the coming years is tied to a steadily falling birth rate. dji.de reports that no nationwide increase in the number of children looked after in daycare centers is expected until 2024 and that eastern Germany is affected by a greater reduction in daycare center places. The decline in births is a comprehensive phenomenon that not only affects Central Saxony, but also other regions.

Effects of the decline in birth rates

The dramatic development not only means parents may no longer have their needs met, but also has a direct impact on childcare infrastructure. In 2021, almost 800,000 births were recorded nationwide, while this value fell to around 700,000 in 2023. These numbers are alarming and mean that places remain unused in many daycare centers, especially in eastern Germany. In some cities, daycare centers are partially empty, which seriously questions the concept of needs-based care zdf.de describes.

At the same time, the number of parental contributions is steadily increasing. In the after-school care center, contributions rose from 66 euros in 2020 to 76 euros in 2022, which further increases the financial burden for many families. The operating costs for an after-school care center also increase, which increases the pressure on the quality of care.

Step into the future

To counteract this, a survey for children and young people was launched, which runs until August 30th. The goal is to plan suitable leisure activities and support offers. So far, over 200 young people have taken part. The survey can be completed anonymously and easily on the district’s website.

In addition, a funding amount of around 20,000 euros was decided to support the district fire brigade association. This serves to coordinate youth work in the period from September 1st to December 31st and includes the support of the youth fire brigades as well as various prevention and publicity measures. Unfortunately, the funding is only guaranteed for the short term, which makes planning difficult for the youth and children's fire departments involved.

Demographic change and falling birth rates pose major challenges for those responsible in the district. The constant review and adjustment of the daycare needs plan shows that the communities and cities are willing to face the changes. An urgently needed step into the future that requires a good hand from everyone involved!
