Investment for preservation

The Free State of Saxony is investing around 500,000 euros in the renovation of the Tarras Wall, which protects the dam from damage caused by waves and ice pressure. This dry stone wall has an impressive architecture made of carved quarry stones and is an important element in the stability of the dam. In the coming weeks, around 30 meters of the wall in the western area of ​​the Striegelhaus will be renovated, as the natural stone in this section is severely weathered, loosened and deformed.

This construction project was coordinated together with the city administrations and various authorities and approved by the lower monument protection authority. It is important that all necessary permits have been obtained in order to preserve the special character of the pond, which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří mining region” since summer 2019. The Erzengler Pond was originally created between 1569 and 1570 as a mining pond and has since developed into a sought-after EU bathing water that also functions as a compensating, intermediate and reserve storage facility.
