On Friday, June 20, at 8 p.m., the curtain on the Kriebstein seaside stage rises for the highly expected premiere of the summer operetta "Countess Mariza". This entertaining piece was created in 1924 by the Hungarian composer Emmerich Kálmán who is considered an important figure in the development of the Viennese operetta. His works are known for the catchy melodies and the harmonious mix of different music styles - from Viennese waltz to the Hungarian CSárdás. The "Countess Mariza" is all about the fictional engagement of the protagonist, who provides some turbulent turns.
In the plot, the Countess Mariza invents a fiancee named Baron Zsupán to avert undesirable admirers. But when the real Baron Zsupán appears, the story becomes all the more complex. Emmerich Kálmán, who was born under the name Imre Koppstein, grew up in a musical environment and had an immense creative career. Kálmán took his inspiration out of Hungarian folk music, the Viennese music tradition and even jazz, which became increasingly popular at the heyday of his career in the 1920s. Works like "The Csárdásfürstin" and "Countess Mariza" gave him global fame and make him one of the most influential operetta composers of his time.
