Waldheim loses its mastermind: Dieter Hentschel resigns!

On July 11, 2025, Dieter Hentschel, a long-time and esteemed city councilor, said goodbye to Waldheim's political stage. The 77-year-old requested his resignation, which was unanimously accepted by the city council. In his speech, Mayor Steffen Ernst from the FDP acknowledged Hentschel's decades of commitment and emphasized how important his decisions were for the city. The native of Waldheim has been active in the city council since August 13, 2009 and took part in 167 meetings during this time.

In his final words, Hentschel emphasized that in all his decisions, the voters' expectations always came first. For him, social issues as well as economic and cultural development were central aspects of his political work. As early as the 1970s, he was active as the “Schelle” cultural center director, an impression that is still reflected in his work today. He was also a co-founder of the Hartha/Waldheim Spindle Carnival Club (SFC).

Commitment to Waldheim

After the fall of the Wall, Hentschel was also involved in the local history association and played a key role in the renovation of the historic Napoleon House. His heart beat not only for the culture, but also for the community. He was active in the group of helpers who looked after the residents of the “Colorful Houses” and Ukrainian refugees. His connection to nature is reflected in his active membership in the garden club “Im Sauergras”, where he describes his garden as a place of retreat.

In his farewell, Mayor Ernst emphasized Hentschel's significant influence on urban development. Traffic calming, the renovation of the town hall's facade and the integration of new districts would be unthinkable without his commitment. Hentschel was also a supporter of the local festival on the occasion of the 825th anniversary of Waldheim and actively campaigned for the reduction of parental contributions.

A new section

Although Hentschel is now leaving the city council, he plans to attend parliamentary group and city council meetings as a guest in the future. In this way he remains connected to the political landscape of Waldheim. Eyk Fechner will replace Hentschel on the city council and continue the important work.

The Hentschel case reflects the great commitment of many citizens who are committed to the community in their cities. At a time when cities like Waldheim are facing many challenges, it is crucial to have people like Hentschel who see both social and cultural aspects as the basis for a city worth living in.
