New school year starts in Saxony: More students, but also more worries!

A new school year begins for around 534,000 students in Saxony. Above all, around 37,000 first-graders are starting their first year of school with wide eyes. But a look at the numbers also shows that the number of first-year students has fallen by around 3,500 compared to the previous year. Despite this decline, the total number of students increased by 10,000, which is mainly due to the immigration of families to Germany. Education Minister Conrad Clemens (CDU) is optimistic that the number of lessons canceled can be reduced in the new school year. Nevertheless, questions remain unanswered, especially regarding the challenges that schools in Saxony have to overcome.

The Education and Science Union (GEW), however, is skeptical. The omens are bleak: according to their calculations, over 4,000 additional teachers will be needed to fully cover classes. In the last school year, around nine percent of lessons were canceled due to a lack of teachers. A glimmer of hope could be the hiring of more than 1,000 new teachers, but is that enough? Sächsische also reports that the school budgets in the current budget have been reduced by 9 million euros to 15 million euros, which severely limits individual support for students.

Digital progress and school development

This school year, particular attention is also being paid to digitalization and school development. New curricula in German and mathematics come into force that take into account binding nationwide educational standards. The goal here is clearly to strengthen basic skills in reading, writing and arithmetic. In order to make lessons more varied, a pilot project for interdisciplinary lessons is being implemented. Teachers can also use the AI assistant KAI – an innovation from Saxony that helps enrich lessons.

A further step into the digital future is the licensing of the “Bettermarks” platform, which analyzes learning progress and provides customized tasks. However, the GEW warns of a “double crisis” that needs to be overcome, because in addition to the shortage of teachers, there is also a financial bottleneck. School administrators have limited resources for substitute teachers - a situation that is already putting schools under pressure. According to information from MDR, schools have alternative options: they can hire students, trainees or even retired teachers to replace them. This could be a short-term solution, but it remains to be seen how successful these measures will be in practice.

Outlook and challenges

It is obvious that Saxony faces major challenges, but also offers opportunities. The Minister of Education's optimism could help initiate a positive turnaround, for which around 1,340 new teacher positions were closed. But while some are preparing for the coming months with hope, unions remain skeptical. How many construction sites still need to be resolved in order to sustainably improve the situation will only become apparent over the course of the school year.
