Oschatz will be the hotspot for the European Ultracycling Championships in 2026: party and ride!
Oschatz will become the hub for cycling in 2026 when the city hosts the European Ultracycling Championships. This was officially announced today, November 11th, 2025. Preparations are already in full swing as the event promises to be a big celebration for the entire region. Organizer Steven Dornbusch has the ambitious idea of bringing the European Championships to Oschatz, and the city is happy to take on this challenge. The ultracycling competitions will take athletes on routes of up to 900 kilometers across Saxony, with the start and finish in the heart of the city.
As a special highlight, the drivers and their teams will arrive in Oschatz on May 21, 2026. The evening before the competition, the ceremonial opening is on the program before the races start the next day. Participants can expect different finish times: While some top athletes cross the finish line after just 24 to 26 hours, others have to plan up to 50 to 60 hours. It is particularly pleasing that the first registrations have already been received, including the 2024 world champion in the 24-hour time trial, Sebastian Mayr.
Cyclist festival and festive atmosphere
The competition will not only consist of grueling races; On the Sunday after the European Championships there will be a colorful cycling festival. Here, enthusiastic cyclists can show off their skills on circuits of 50 and 100 kilometers. Gravel bikers also get their money's worth and can look forward to special routes.
But the bicycle festival will be more than just a race. Numerous celebrations are planned during the competition, where DJs will provide entertainment and local cycling clubs and retailers will present themselves. Interest in the event already seems huge and many local clubs have ambitiously offered their support. The European Championships are held as an open competition for which no qualification is required, which makes it easier for many athletes to take part.
Ultracycling in context
It's not the first time Oschatz has been in the spotlight in cycling. The city has already hosted the World Gliding Aerobatic Championships in 2022, proving once again that it is ready to host major events. In addition, the region has Race Across Germany have already proven their skills in cycling. This important long-distance event for racing cyclists, which was launched in 1999, is a real challenge for cycling enthusiasts and has established itself as a family event within the ultracycling community.
With this combination of top-class competition and a major cycling festival, Oschatz becomes a central meeting point for athletes and fans alike. It will be exciting to see how the city prepares for the European Championships and what surprises the event still has in store. One thing is certain: cycling is in the air and the anticipation is great! The coming months will be crucial to optimally prepare the city for the big event.
