Revolution in public transport: Schkeuditz presents the driverless electric bus!

The future of mobility has arrived - and it has a name: Flash 2. The new, automated shuttle bus from the Austrian manufacturer Eversum was presented on Mobility Day in Schkeuditz. This innovative vehicle is not only electrically powered, but also offers exciting prospects for connections to Leipzig-Halle Airport.

With a length of 8.40 meters and a width of 2.30 meters, the Flash 2 is slightly slimmer than conventional public buses. It offers 15 seats and a place for a safety driver. The vehicle is currently not ready to drive because it lacks essential sensors that are required for autonomous driving. A safety driver is initially required to drive the shuttle from the depot to the track.

Planned routes and connections

The planned route for Flash 2 runs from the DHL terminal via the B6 to the industrial area southwest of the airport and on to the passenger terminal. New stops in the commercial area are intended to significantly improve connections, while traffic lights along the route will be connected to the shuttle via mobile communications. The aim of this initiative is to connect the commercial areas to the S5 more effectively and thus relieve the burden on the S3.

A positive development for the region is that two new buses should be in use in Schkeuditz by the middle of next year. Doing without a safety driver will not be possible until 2028 at the earliest, depending on the legal and technical framework.

Technological advances in the mobility sector

The Flash 2 is part of a larger trend in public transport. Eversum's eShuttle platform has been equipped with advanced by-wire systems that support autonomous driving. In Germany, projects such as the RABus in Mannheim and Friedrichshafen are in the starting blocks, the aim of which is to create the technical requirements for the use of such shuttles this year, according to omnibus.news.

Multimodal transport solutions, such as the concept of autonomous public transport shuttles, are becoming increasingly important. They replace privately used transport and contribute to increasing the quality of life in cities. In addition, modular buses and ride pooling systems create new opportunities for flexible, needs-based mobility, as described on vdv.de.

At a time when space in urban areas is limited, the introduction of such systems could help to make better use of the space for environmentally friendly transport and quality of life.

The Flash 2 not only represents technical progress, but also a change in the perception of public mobility. There is something to be excited about about the future of autonomous driving in Schkeuditz.
