Torgau relies on green energy: New solar parks for 20,000 households!
Torgau is pioneering when it comes to renewable energies. The city is planning to expand its solar energy production and has set its sights on two new photovoltaic parks in the districts of Mehderitzsch and Beckwitz. How Torgauer newspaper reported, the city councilors gave the green light for these groundbreaking projects in August 2024.
The first draft plans for the land-use planning will be available to the public from July 14th. Project partners are envia Therm and Torgauer Stadtwerke, and the investment amount amounts to an impressive 35 million euros. In total, the new solar systems are expected to produce an output of 57 megawatts peak, which will benefit around 20,000 households - that's a lot of green electricity!
Details about the solar parks
The Mehderitzsch Süd solar park will be built south of the town and the former railway embankment, on an area of 35.5 hectares. This square park has the potential to generate around 41 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, benefiting approximately 14,000 households. Interestingly, this is low-yield soil, so no high-quality arable land will be lost and the visual impact will be minimal.
In contrast, the Bennewitz solar park is planned with a capacity of 17 megawatt peak, which will produce 18 gigawatt hours of electricity annually - enough to supply around 6,000 households. This V-shaped facility is being built on a 17.3 hectare brownfield site south of the Bennewitz farm dairy and east of Beckwitz, with the aim of expanding existing woody structures and creating new biotopes.
Sustainable construction and community involvement
The solar parks are equipped with modern solar modules that are mounted on stainless steel supports. These beams will reach a height of 3 to 3.20 meters. Good news for agriculture: the green space underneath can be used for extensive grazing. In addition, it was farmers who initiated the initiatives, which means that they are also involved in the care of the areas.
The electricity generated is fed into the grid via a 110 kilovolt high-voltage line, although battery storage is not currently planned, but could certainly be an option in the future.
Financial benefits and citizen participation
One thing is clear: the municipalities not only benefit from the trade tax, but also receive 0.1 cents per kilowatt hour. In addition, citizens and companies have the opportunity to participate in the projects by investing between 1,000 and 50,000 euros, which represents good business for everyone involved.
The plans can be viewed from July 14th to August 13th in the town hall and online. A preparation phase lasting around two years is planned; Construction of the facility could then begin in 2026, with possible commissioning in 2027. Further details can also be provided Power technology which has reported on other solar projects in the region and includes the development of the Torgau Solar Park 1.
The initiative can be seen as a further step towards a sustainable energy future and it remains to be seen how the implementation of these ambitious plans will progress.
