Forest fire in Böhlitz: Drone documents 12.5 hectares of destruction!

A forest fire broke out in Böhlitz and Paschwitz on Sunday afternoon, affecting an area of 12.5 hectares. The fire, which was probably caused by harvesting work with a combine harvester, led to an intensive response from the fire departments from Schkeuditz, Eilenburg, Torgau, Oschatz, Wermsdorf and Dahlen. Around 120 emergency services worked tirelessly to put out the fire and prevent it from getting worse. The THW local branch in Torgau also provided important support, while an agricultural cooperative helped to ensure the water supply and cut corridors.

How lvz.de reported, the extent of the destruction can also be seen in the trees that were not destroyed by the flames: the high heat severely damaged many of them, which could be linked to increasing bark beetle infestation. In order to better document the damage, a special drone was used for the first time, inspecting the area from a height of over 120 meters.

Help and prevention

The situation not only brings with it major challenges, but also important offers of support for forest owners. The Taura forestry district offers free advice on clearing damaged wood, funding and reforestation. Those affected can receive individual advice from advisory forester Christian Huster, who can be reached on 01733770307 or by email. In addition, on August 16th there will be an excursion to areas that have been burned in recent years to present options for reforestation. Registrations are under Taura.Poststelle@smekul.sachsen.de possible.

Such forest fires have been a recurring problem in recent years due to climatic conditions and an increasing bark beetle infestation. In reports from br.de The dramatic situation is pointed out: In a current operation in Bavaria, 5,000 cubic meters of infected wood were transported from the outskirts of the national park to sawmills. In order to avoid future damage, the fight against the bark beetle will continue over the next few months.

Forest protection in Germany

The growing danger from forest fires and pests is also highlighted by nationwide forest fire statistics. According to information from ble.de The protection and preservation of forests in Germany is particularly important, as the high population density entails a special responsibility. The aim is to reduce the number and size of forest fires and to make appropriate preparations. Prevention and risk assessment are crucial to minimize future damage.

In view of the recent events in Böhlitz and Paschwitz, cooperation between the fire brigade and the authorities has the highest priority. Residents were informed about the heavy smoke development via the Nina warning app, which shows how important quick communication is in crisis situations. We must all work towards a sustainable future for forests so that these valuable nature reserves are preserved for future generations.
