Emergency aid Freiberg: 25 years of helping people in crises
On November 2nd, 2025, Emergency Aid Freiberg will celebrate a very special anniversary: 25 years of service to the community. To mark this occasion, emergency services, fire departments and police gather for a festive blue light service, followed by a convivial blue light café. These celebrations recognize the valuable work of the volunteers who are there for the population around the clock and provide support in the most difficult moments.
The Freiberg Emergency Aid currently has 19 dedicated volunteers who work intensively to look after the bereaved when sudden deaths occur. During operations, they accompany the police in delivering news of deaths, be it after tragic accidents, suicides or crimes. The helpers not only provide emotional support for relatives, but also support first responders and witnesses in court cases. On average, around 90 missions come together every year, which shows how important and urgent the work of emergency aid is.
A look behind the scenes
The volunteers' commitment also includes training weekends, most recently from April 11th to 13th at the Kohren Sahlis adult education center. Among other things, a lecture was given here about the tasks and experiences of a crime scene cleaner, which provided information in a humorous way. The topic of burial was also presented in a respectful and relaxed manner, which put the participants in a good mood.
The events not only promote specialist knowledge, but also team spirit. A hike together to Gnandstein Castle and an amusing tour of the historical premises rounded off the weekend and provided culinary highlights in a restaurant.
Volunteering with heart
Emergency assistance is an integral part of psychosocial support and always needs new volunteers. Training and the willingness to continue training in crisis intervention and emergency pastoral care are fundamental requirements for volunteers. The tasks are varied: from caring for those affected to supporting emergency services in emotionally stressful situations. This is also underlined by the Johanniters, who are actively looking for committed people who have their hearts in the right place and have empathy.
The commitment of volunteers is not just limited to the Freiberg emergency aid. Volunteers are being sought all over Germany to support people in need, be it through psychosocial help or in looking after seniors and refugees. The options for volunteering are diverse and offer opportunities to positively influence your own life and that of other people.
Overall, Emergency Aid Freiberg is not only a central point of contact in crisis situations, but also a place where community and solidarity are very important. The 25th anniversary is not only a reason to celebrate, but also an invitation to everyone to get involved and become part of this valuable work.
