Level crossings in Schlottwitz: Major construction work from June 25th!
In the coming days there will be significant restrictions on rail traffic in the town of Schlottwitz, part of the picturesque Müglitztal region. On June 2nd, Deutsche Bahn began extensive modernization work on the Müglitztalbahn, which runs between Heidenau and Altenberg. The aim of these measures is to bring tracks, bridges and platforms up to date in order to offer travelers a better experience in the future. Noise protection will also be a big issue, as saechsische.de reports.
Between June 25th and 28th, the level crossings on Burkhardswalder Straße and Reinhardsgrimmaer Straße will be completely closed due to this construction work. Noise and restrictions are to be expected during this time as noisy work will take place during the day between 7am and 6pm. This means some inconvenience for residents, but the level crossing remains open to pedestrians and cyclists.
Extent of construction work
The work includes replacing thresholds, replacing traffic signals and renovating a total of four bridges. The Geising and Oberschlottwitz stops will also be made barrier-free so that step-free access between the train and the platform will be guaranteed in the future. Around 450 travelers use the stations every day, and several million euros are being invested in these modernizations, as mdr.de highlights.
Overall, the entire construction project is scheduled to be completed by August 31, 2025, with train traffic completely suspended until August 10. A replacement bus service will be set up for the period of standstill. However, these have longer journey times than trains, so travelers may have to leave earlier to avoid missing their connections.
Background and noise protection
The modernizations are part of a comprehensive strategy to improve the noise situation in Germany. According to Deutsche Bahn, 46.8 kilometers of soundproof walls were completed in 2023 to protect residents from noise pollution. The aim of these measures is to significantly increase the quality of life for employees in the nearby watch industry in Glashütte as well as for those visiting the Eastern Ore Mountains.
The last comprehensive renovation of the railway line took place between August 2002 and the end of December 2003 following flood damage. The focus is now on making the infrastructure fit for the future and making transport via the Müglitztalbahn attractive for both locals and visitors.
The coming weeks will be challenging for residents and travelers in Schlottwitz, but the measures taken are a big step in the right direction to make rail transport safer and more comfortable in the long term.
