Caspar-David-Friedrich-Weg: Germany's most beautiful hiking trail 2025!
Saxon Switzerland has a new title to celebrate: The Caspar-David-Friedrich-Weg was recently named “Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail” of 2025. This honor was announced as part of a public vote by the trade magazine “Wandermagazin”, in which the 15 kilometer long circular route triumphed over 20 competing hiking trails in the day tour category. So reported Sächsische.de.
The announcement took place on Wednesday afternoon in Reinhardtsdorf-Schöna, where Saxony's Tourism Minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU) was also present. This award is particularly significant as it is the first time since 2007 that a Saxon hiking trail has won this title. Historically, the last path to receive this honor was the well-known Malerweg in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
The path and its highlights
The Caspar-David-Friedrich-Weg, which opened in 2024, starts in the Bad Schandauer district of Krippen and runs over the impressive Kaiserkrone and Wolfsberg points before returning back. On this picturesque circular route, hikers pass through a total of 12 stations that lead to places that inspired the famous German painter Caspar David Friedrich during his work. At these stations there are also information boards that illustrate Friedrich's sketches and his paintings, a real treat for art and nature lovers. After all, the breathtaking landscape, characterized by steep cliffs and deep valleys, inspired Friedrich to write some of his most famous works, such as “The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog”.
Especially on the occasion of Friedrich's 250th birthday, the hiking trail was revised and equipped with new information boards. These measures help keep the artist's historical legacy alive while introducing visitors to the beauties of nature. Loud MDR.de Last year there were even special training courses for tour guides in order to impart in-depth knowledge about Friedrich's life and work. Highlights such as visits to the Dresden Albertinum and on-site motif searches support these efforts.
A milestone for tourism
The award for the Caspar David Friedrich Trail is not only a personal triumph for the region, but could also have a positive impact on tourism. The Saxon Switzerland Tourism Association hopes that the new popularity will also increase the number of visitors. In addition to its cultural aspects, the path offers the opportunity to experience the impressive nature of Saxon Switzerland up close. In addition to the picturesque views, hikers can also enjoy the regional cuisine and Saxon hospitality.
Anyone who would like to discover new perspectives on the left side of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains should not miss this hiking trail. With its unique combination of art and nature, the Caspar-David-Friedrich-Weg is a real experience that invites you to hike and discover.
