Lützow Castle: From the trillion-dollar hope to expensive luxury apartments!

In Heidenau, a small town in Saxony, there is only one striking building: Lützow Castle in Großsedlitz. Once offered on the Internet for a trillion euros, it is now all about renovation and redesign. Interest in the magnificent building, which was built in the Neo-Renaissance style, remains unbroken and plans for further development are promising.

In 2013, the offer of an astronomical sum of one trillion euros shocked the public, but it was not meant seriously. The actual price for which the castle was ultimately sold was an above-average two million euros. The castle is currently owned by Ventar GmbH, which is also lovingly renovating other monuments in the region, such as the Heidenauer Nord train station.

Planned renovation measures

A project-related development plan is currently being worked on in order to advance the renovation plans that were initially rejected by the city. These initial designs, which included multi-family housing, were not approved for various reasons. Now the vision of an ensemble with outstanding architecture, which will include ten high-quality apartments in the castle, is being celebrated. These new homes are expected to be among the most expensive in the region.

The plans also stipulate that new buildings should be subordinate to the historical substance of the castle and should be a maximum of two to three floors high. A parking deck will be integrated into the slope, while unused buildings will be demolished. Sedlitzer Straße will be used for development, and large areas around the castle will be preserved as a park in order to enrich the park landscape.

The history of the castle

Lützow Castle was built in 1890 by the large landowner Lützow. Since Lützow's death in 1940, the castle remained in the hands of his family, who moved to Hamburg. It later changed owners several times - among other things, it housed a children's health home from 1957 to 1990. The Christian Youth Village Association acquired the area in 1991, and Heidenauer Variant Bauprojektentwicklung GmbH has been the owner since 2015.

Over the years, the building has not only been a living space, but also a training facility. Until 1991 it served as a vocational school for the Deutsche Reichsbahn. However, the last years of use were characterized by vacancies until Ventar GmbH finally recognized the great potential of the property.

Commitment to monument protection

The renovation plans benefit from the efforts of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, which supports up to 600 projects in Germany every year. Every year around 20 million euros flow into the preservation of historical buildings. This not only speaks for the high value that monument protection enjoys, but also for the commitment that is invested in projects such as Lützow Castle. Over 7,500 monuments have been supported so far, so Lützow Castle is in good company.

In summary, it can be said that Lützow Castle is not only a magnificent contemporary witness, but is also an investment in the future. The combination of historical appreciation and modern living concepts shows that there is a good knack for renovating and reusing history. Preparations for this have begun and the city of Heidenau is excited to see what else the venerable building has to offer.
