Severe thunderstorm warning: squalls and heavy rain over central Germany!

This Sunday, June 15, 2025, the motto in Germany is: Go outside, but with caution! The German Weather Service (DWD) will issue alarming severe weather warnings for several federal states from this afternoon. Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia are particularly affected, where severe thunderstorms with accompanying rain are expected. These include heavy rain, dreaded hail and gusts of wind that can reach up to 85 km/h. So reported MDR about an impending warning that calls on citizens to be careful.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the emergency services are already on alert as the most violent thunderstorms are already active there. It looks like the rest of Germany won't pass unscathed either: from the afternoon onwards, heavy showers and thunderstorms will cause uncomfortable weather. Loud DWD There will be high rainfall, especially in the west, and later also in the south and east, sometimes more than 40 liters per square meter in a short period of time. In Saxony-Anhalt, individual towns have already been hit by such storms, and the Chemnitz “Kosmos” festival even had to be canceled prematurely because of the warning forecasts.

Temperature differences and weather fronts

Remarkable temperature differences continue to be observed in central Germany: While in the west of Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt the temperatures in the afternoon are around 23 degrees, in Saxony it heats up quite a bit, for example in Elsterheide-Klein Partwitz with 32 degrees or Dresden-Seidnitz with 33 degrees. The sudden cold front, which reaches Germany with a low over the Shetlands, causes a drastic displacement of the warm, moist air and heralds thunderstorms. The meteorologists report this from Weather online also forecasts about the possibility of hailstones, which can be up to three centimeters in size.

There are reports of full cellars in the Paderborn area, where the emergency services are in constant use - but fortunately no injuries. The weather situation is therefore more than critical and, according to the DWD, the situation will not calm down even at night. Many more thunderstorms are expected in the coming hours, increasing the risk of severe weather in the east and south until Monday night.

A look at the weather outlook

The night of Monday will be quieter, but the thunderstorms are moving eastwards and the risk of severe weather is fortunately subsiding. On Monday we can expect highs of a mild 20 to 23 degrees. However, the warning remains in mind: It is important to keep an eye on the current weather warnings in order to recognize dangers such as lightning, floods and storms at an early stage. The DWD will continue to update the warning situation regularly and adapt it to new developments.

So when you leave the house, be sure to check the weather warnings - today's meteorology has a lot to offer!
