In 2024, the traffic statistics in Saxony-Anhalt have developed positively. The trend shows that more and more people are using buses and trains. According to that State Statistical Office A total of 188.6 million passengers were counted in local rail and commercial bus transport. This represents a significant increase compared to 2023, where the number of passengers fell by 5.3 percent.

Around 500,000 people rely on local public transport in Saxony-Anhalt every day, with the majority choosing the popular scheduled services. The vehicles alone covered an impressive 113.9 million kilometers and also crossed the borders of neighboring federal states. On average, individual passengers traveled 14.6 kilometers on public transport, with the tram being particularly popular with 46.8 percent of journeys.

Nationwide trend in public transport

Im Jahr 2024 waren es insgesamt 11,4 Milliarden Fahrgäste, die Busse und Bahnen in Deutschland nutzten – ein Plus von rund fünf Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahr.

In local public transport (ÖPNV), which covers 99 percent of regular services, passenger volume also increased by five percent. The growth on short-haul routes is particularly noteworthy, with passenger numbers rising by six percent to 2.7 billion. Trams recorded an increase of five percent with 3.9 billion passengers, while buses recorded an increase of four percent with 5.2 billion passengers.
