Shock in Saxony: 87-year-old crashes into a horse-drawn carriage in an accident!

An accident occurred in a tranquil part of Vogtland on Tuesday afternoon, which once again highlights the dangers in road traffic. An 87-year-old driver hit a horse-drawn carriage, resulting in injuries to the driver and horse. The incident occurred shortly before 2:20 p.m. on Erlbacher Straße, not far from the entrance to Erlbach, like Sächsische.de reported.

The driver wanted to overtake the carriage, but had to cut back in because of an oncoming cyclist. There was a collision that triggered a chain reaction. If you can't imagine how quickly everything can suddenly change in this situation, you should know: The draft horse was thrown from the carriage by the impact and fell around 150 meters further. The carriage's drawbar broke and our pregnant carriage ended up in the ditch. The 65-year-old coachman was able to escape by jumping, but sustained minor injuries. The horse didn't remain unscathed either.

The background to carriage accidents

This is not the first incident of this kind, and statistics show that such accidents are not uncommon. According to the Road Safety Board (KFV), there were already 16 people injured in collisions with carriages in Austria last year. This is a worrying trend that shows that there are still many dangerous situations lurking on the roads. The data is based on evaluations by Statistics Austria and includes a large number of different traffic accidents.

Another concern is that the majority of these accidents often occur through no fault of others. In this context, there is a high number of unreported cases, which could trivialize the actual danger of road traffic for such types of vehicles. To counteract this, the KFV is developing, among other things, innovative solutions such as the free driving license app Yarrive, which is specifically intended for those people who want to become more familiar with traffic rules.

The current accident in a broader perspective

The renewed reports of carriage accidents not only arouse sympathy, but also questions. What needs to change to increase road safety? The statistics already mentioned show that around 45,000 people were injured in accidents involving bicycles, e-bikes and e-scooters in 2024. The 36% increase in fatalities in the traffic sector compared to the previous year is particularly alarming.

It remains to be seen what measures will be taken to minimize such incidents in the future. Until then, it is advisable to exercise particular caution when driving and pay particular attention to horse-drawn vehicles. This keeps traffic safe and we can all get home accident-free.
