Christmas joy for women in shelters: Pack boxes now!
The pre-Christmas season is just around the corner and with it the opportunity to do something good. This year, the DGB district of Saxony is calling for women and children in shelters to be given a small gesture of joy. Under the motto “Warm package – a gift that strengthens” the aim is to bring joy to particularly affected women and their families. Many of these women have had to leave their homes due to domestic violence and can only take a few personal items with them. Therefore the call is very clear: pack a shoebox with gifts!
What exactly belongs in the shoebox? The list is varied and should contain a little surprise for both mothers and children. Permitted content includes:
- Mützen, Schals und Handschuhe
- Warme Socken
- Drogierartikel und Hygieneprodukte
- Teebeutel oder Kaffee
- Kleinigkeiten für Kinder wie Malsachen und Kuscheltiere
- Schulsachen wie Stifte und Hefte
- Spiele und Bücher
- haltbare Naschereien
What should not be given as gifts are sharp objects, used items, alcohol, candles and perishable food. To ensure that the gifts arrive on time, they can be delivered unsealed in Dresden from November 24th to December 8th, 2025. The delivery location is the DGB district of Saxony, Schützenplatz 14, 01067 Dresden.
Help and support for those affected by violence
The campaign is part of a wider initiative to support women suffering from violence. In Germany there are around 400 women's shelters and over 40 refuge apartments, which provide more than 6,000 places for women affected by violence and their children. These facilities not only offer protection, but also quick and unbureaucratic help as well as qualified advice and support.
The “Violence against Women” helpline is available for women and men who need help. It is available 24/7, free and anonymous. The telephone number is 116 016. There are also comprehensive advice centers that offer special services for women with disabilities and multilingual support. There are also counseling services available for men affected by violence on 0800 1239900, which lead to various forms of support.
These offers are important because violence in relationships is an issue that affects many people. Thanks to a wide range of offerings from specialist advice centers to special intervention centers, those affected can quickly find support in emergencies.
Use the upcoming Christmas season to take a stand against violence and give some hope. Every shoebox counts! Further information can be found in the call from the DGB Saxony district, which can be read here: Heat package – a gift that strengthens.
