Bulwark in the Reinoldinum: Civil society in the face of the crisis!
On November 6, 2025, a film and discussion evening will take place at the Reinoldinum that will address a very current and explosive question: Is civil society in danger? The evening begins at 7 p.m. and is opened by the documentary “Bollwerk,” which was directed by Jakob Wehner. The film addresses the challenges that those involved in civil society face in Wurzen, Saxony - a region characterized by right-wing extremism. The focus is on the commitment of the protagonists in the Network for Democratic Culture e.V. and highlights how important social cohesion is in difficult times.
Jakob Wehner will be present in person and will be available to answer questions after the screening. The subsequent discussion, in which guests from Wurzen, Zwickau and Dortmund will also take part, will be particularly exciting. The focus here will be on topics such as the threats posed by right-wing extremism and strengthening civil society. The aim of the event is to exchange valuable experiences and develop viable perspectives that strengthen the social space. The organizer, the International Education and Encounter Association e.V. in cooperation with the Evangelical Education Center in the Dortmund Church District and the Respect Office of the City of Dortmund, has made entry free. Prior registration is not necessary.
The social background
Civil society in Germany includes around 800,000 organizations that work for self-empowerment and the general welfare. This multitude of initiatives has developed steadily over the last 40 years and represents an important pillar of social cohesion. But it is no secret that this cohesion is increasingly being put to the test, particularly by the challenges of globalization and changing social conditions. Seen this way, the importance of civil society becomes even clearer, as it is perceived as a beacon of hope for democracy and integration. At the same time, it is faced with challenges that cannot be ignored, such as different identities and aspirations in an increasingly fragmented society.
The Corona pandemic in particular has had a profound impact on active club life, which has a negative impact on social cohesion. According to an analysis by the Federal Agency for Civic Education, there is a significant decrease in support for democracy and a critical perception of the political system in various groups. However, trust in civil society actors remains high and they play a central role in negotiating conflicts non-violently and acting as integrative places.
How necessary it is to exchange ideas about these topics is evident today more than ever. The event at the Reinoldinum will offer the public the opportunity to discuss the current challenges and look for solutions together. At a time when social cohesion has rarely been so important, the topics are obvious and the evening could be the start of new approaches and collaborations to enable civil society to have a strong presence again.
