Ice Pirates in transition: New flex boards for Crimmitschauer Stadium!

A lot is happening in the Crimmitschauer Sahnpark: The renovation of the artificial ice stadium is going according to plan and the ice pirates can look forward to new ice soon. The players will be able to go back to the freshly prepared area next month. Among the hard-working helpers during the renovation is Jörg Wippel, a 52-year-old train driver from Altenburg, who even sacrificed vacation days for the good cause. “I have been a loyal fan of the Ice Pirates for over twenty years,” admits Wippel as he examines a piece of the new material. If his shift schedule allows it, he regularly attends home games.

But not everything goes smoothly. The city of Crimmitschau has terminated the usage agreement with Eisspiraten Crimmitschau GmbH, which poses major challenges for the fans and those responsible. The reason is different opinions about the contractual obligations regarding the new flex boards and LED lighting. However, as Daniela Lange, the city's press spokeswoman, explains, the city administration is willing to talk and is ready to discuss the matter. The dismissal, which is causing consternation in these politically turbulent times, is the second in two years.

Conflicts and conversations

The conflict escalated after a consultation on January 16, 2025 between Mayor André Raphael and representatives of the Ice Pirates. It became clear that the city of Crimmitschau is not prepared to cover the costs for the urgently needed flex boards and LED lights. In addition, a proposal to refinance through ticket price increases was rejected by the Ice Pirates. On January 20, 2025, Jörg Buschmann, managing director of the Eisspiraten, expressed his concerns in a letter to city representatives. It turns out that the discussions about the requirements of the DEL2, which have been taking place since 2018, have made little progress.

The political discussions are active, and some members of the parliamentary groups are signaling a willingness to find solutions. Heiko Gumprecht from the AfD and CDU parliamentary group leader Stephan Theuring bring proposals for discussion, including a ticket price increase of €2.50.

Sport as an important part of the community

A theme that always resonates in the background is the importance of sport for many people. According to the German Association of Cities, municipalities are the largest sponsors of sport and contribute around 80 percent of total public expenditure. Modern and multifunctional sports facilities are crucial for the attractiveness of a city and increase the quality of life of its residents. The need for a well-equipped sports facility program is undeniable, as sporting activities increasingly take place in public spaces.

The Eispiren Crimmitschau are not only a sporting team, but also a beacon for the region. Despite the difficulties, they remain willing to talk and are planning further discussions with sponsors, politicians and fans in order to find a solution together. Invitations to these discussions will be sent out in the near future. The hope is that everyone involved can show a good hand and reach an agreement, because support for this sports location is crucial for the future of ice hockey in Crimmitschau.
