Hot election campaign action in Zwickau: Who will be mayor of the city?

It's getting hot in Zwickau - not only with the temperatures, which are around 30 degrees in the shade, but also in the political competition. Today, on July 2, 2025, three girls and one boy are running for the office of mayor of the Zwickau summer holiday city. The election campaign takes place in the trendy courtyard of the Pestalozzi School, where the candidates present their promises to the voters and canvass for the votes of young citizens. It remains to be seen whether voters will be deterred by the high temperatures or whether they will be motivated to rush into the voting queues. The result will be determined at a later date, as an exciting finale to the 24-hour election campaign.

At the same time, preparations for the federal election are in full swing in the city. The placement of election posters begins today. In Zwickau, ten parties submitted their election proposals, and active participation was registered by Friday afternoon. The registration period ends next Monday at 6 p.m., and there are already numerous new and old faces waiting to vote.

The candidates in the federal election

Among the current MPs running again are Matthias Moosdorf from the AfD, Carsten Körber from the CDU and Nico Tippelt from the FDP. There is a colorful mix in this constituency: The SPD is bringing a new candidate into play with Jens Juraschka, while the Alliance 90 / Greens are looking for a fresh head in Manuel Schramm. Patrick Leonhardt from the Left and Anselm Meyer from the Free Voters are also new names seeking votes.

If you take a look at the past elections, a total of four candidates from constituency 162 Chemnitz surrounding area / Erzgebirgskreis II made it into the Bundestag. The familiar faces running again include Carlos Kasper from the SPD and Bernhardt Herrmann from the Greens. However, a major change is occurring among the CDU candidates: Marco Wanderwitz has decided not to run again, and Sophie Pojar, 39 years old and a doctoral research assistant, is running. The nomination of Maximilian Krah, a controversial MEP from Dresden, who is running for the AfD after Mike Moncsek withdrew his candidacy, will also be interesting.

Election statistics and voter behavior

Statistically speaking, such elections are always a look into the future. The election statistics not only analyze the results of state and federal elections, but also offer deeper insights into the voting behavior of citizens. These numbers are exciting indicators of how voters voted: from the number of eligible voters to the distribution of votes by age group to gender-specific characteristics. This way you can learn a lot about voting in different cities and municipalities. Current results are also available on this website, which provide a good overview of the electoral system and the voting behavior of Germans.

Whether in the children's elections or the adults in the Bundestag - the Zwickau political landscape is currently diverse and changing. It will be exciting to see how voters' opinions will develop in the lukewarm summer breeze. Good luck to all candidates and a good decision to the voters!
