In the heart of Zwickau: Direct path now open to pedestrians!
From today on, pedestrians in Zwickau are once again allowed to stroll directly from the main market to Innere Plauensche Straße, without having to take the long detour via the Domhof. This decision is part of the extensive construction work that is intended to increase sidewalk comfort in the city center. According to radiozwickau.de, the measures are according to plan and the city is providing information about the progress.
But what exactly happens? Work on Marienstrasse and Marienplatz is ongoing. The newly designed Mariengäßchen was opened five weeks ago. The renovation of the sidewalk on the western side of Marienstrasse, which lies between Innere Plauensche Strasse and the delivery access to the Zwickau Arcaden, is now beginning. Meanwhile, the paving work on Marienplatz is going on at the same time. The entire construction project, which started in March 2024, will be carried out in close cooperation with the Zwickau energy supply, the Zwickau waterworks and telecommunications providers and is scheduled to be completed by the end of November 2025.
Planned redesigns
The city council made the decision to award the construction work for the 2nd construction phase of Marienstraße and Marienplatz on November 30, 2023. The renovation covers approximately 175 meters of Marienstraße and 60 meters of Mariengäßchen. Under the new conditions, the sidewalks on Marienstrasse will be generously designed and covered with large-format natural stone slabs. The eaves areas will have a small granite paving surface, and the driving area will be indicated with a large, bush-hammered granite paving, as zwickau.de reports.
In addition, Marienplatz will be covered with large granite paving, with the sycamore tree remaining as a striking element. Round benches and raised beds around this tree will create a cozy atmosphere in the future, complemented by wastebaskets and bicycle racks. The street lighting will also be converted to modern LED bulbs.
Staggered construction phases and challenges
The construction work will be carried out in different phases to ensure accessibility to the shops and apartments in the area. The first partial construction phase began on March 4, 2024 in the section from Marienstrasse to the delivery zone of the Schocken complex. Archaeological excavations by the Saxony State Office for Archeology are also planned to uncover and secure the cathedral foundation. These requirements are an important aspect of the construction site as they shed light on the region's past.
An important note for Zwickau residents is that the Mariengäßchen will be renovated under full closure from October 2024, while it will remain usable for pedestrians until September 30th. The construction area from Mariengäßchen to the main market and Domhof will be completely closed to flowing traffic, which creates additional challenges for delivery traffic and waste disposal.
The entire construction work is estimated to cost around 1.95 million euros, with financing coming from the federal government, the Free State of Saxony and the city of Zwickau. Around 500,000 euros will flow into the project as funding through the “Urban Development – Living Centers” program. Further details can be found on the City of Zwickau website.
