Pleißental Clinic in Werdau: Financial crisis forces protective shield proceedings!
A storm is brewing in Werdau's healthcare landscape. Pleißental-Klinik GmbH is faced with major financial difficulties and has now pulled the emergency brake - a protective shield procedure is being sought. As the Saxon reports, the district court has already approved this move, meaning the clinic will be placed under temporary protection to address its financial mishaps. The managing director, Uwe Hantzsch, will remain in office and can rely on the support of business lawyer Rüdiger Wienberg. This could help the clinic develop a basic recovery plan, which should be ready by September.
The clinic currently employs around 500 people. But the situation is serious: significant losses already add up to several million euros. In order to continue to ensure the wages of employees, financial resources from the Federal Employment Agency are being used for the time being. These measures are necessary so that hospital operations can continue to run stably despite all the uncertainty, even if construction projects that have already started have been put on hold for the time being. Hantzsch was also critical of the general situation and emphasized that hospitals are often left alone in their financial difficulties.
Increasing pressure on the clinics
The concerns about the Pleißental Clinic are not isolated. The Law firm emphasizes that more and more hospitals are having to resort to the protective shield procedure, not least because of the enormous economic pressure of competition. Since the Corona pandemic, many facilities have observed a decline in the number of cases, an exodus of staff and ever higher costs for energy and other operating expenses. From September 2023, the obligation for management to file for insolvency will be tightened, which will further increase the pressure on many institutions.
In the protective shield procedure, the management remains under control, which enables restructuring measures to be implemented quickly. Advantages such as limiting notice periods to a maximum of three months and receiving insolvency money for up to three months can be essential to the survival of many clinics. With a solid communication strategy and a well-thought-out restructuring concept, the process can be significantly optimized.
The financial outlook for Saxony's clinics
In Saxony there is a tense situation in many hospitals. In order to meet the required annual investments of around 330 million euros, support from the state treasuries is necessary Federal Ministry of Health explained. It is foreseeable that the Pleißental Clinic is not the only hospital fighting for its future. Among other things, Muldentalkliniken GmbH in Grimma had to file for bankruptcy and has already been taken over by Sana Kliniken AG. The Dresden municipal clinic also posted a deficit of around 15 million euros last year.
In order to give the clinics stable financial support, the government is planning reforms that are intended to minimize false incentives in the system. A central measure is the introduction of a retention fee, which is intended to ensure that necessary hospital structures remain in place regardless of the service provision. These reforms are urgently needed to prevent a situation similar to that at the Pleißental Clinic.
The focus is now on how the Pleißental Clinic can successfully implement its restructuring and whether political support is sufficient to secure the clinic and the employees working there.
