Wheel nuts loosened at the VW factory in Zwickau – police are investigating!

A shocking incident recently occurred in the parking lot of the VW factory in Moselle. Unknown perpetrators loosened the wheel nuts of a blue Passat, potentially endangering road safety. As reported on Monday evening, the 54-year-old vehicle owner noticed difficulty steering while driving out of the factory. A closer look revealed the dangerous game: the left wheel was already detached from the suspension. This dangerous intervention in road traffic caused significant material damage of around 3,000 euros. The responsible Radio Zwickau informs that the police are now investigating the dangerous intervention.

Another driver was lucky when he discovered his wheel nuts were loose in this parking lot before he set off. By acting quickly, he was able to prevent an accident. This incident was also reported and was directed against unknown perpetrators. The police are hoping for support from the public: Witnesses who have observed anything suspicious should call 0375 428 102. According to Tag24, VW has also announced that plant security is paying more attention to parking spaces that are open to the public but cannot be monitored by video.

The security situation in Germany

These incidents shed light on the recent trend in crime in the country. While the Federal Criminal Police Office's police crime statistics (PKS) recorded a decrease in crimes of 1.7% to around 5.84 million cases for 2024, the feeling of insecurity has increased among many people. When it comes to crimes that affect people's sense of security, such as dangerous interference with road traffic, it is often not just the cases that are known to the authorities that are reported. Many undetected acts – the so-called dark field – also influence the perception of security in society. There is an increase in crimes that do not appear in the statistics, but still worry the public, as Statista notes.

Accidents caused by dangerous actions such as loosening wheel nuts are not just one-off incidents. The investigations have shown that there is also a need for strong awareness and offers of help from the population in order to increase security and prevent such dangerous interventions. The police clearance rate, which stands at 58% in 2024, is further evidence of the importance of witness-based information in identifying and prosecuting perpetrators.

It remains to be hoped that incidents like those that have recently happened in Moselle will soon be a thing of the past. Security precautions must be continually improved so that citizens can feel safe again in their everyday lives.
