Theater highlights in October: Chemnitz becomes Europe’s cultural stage!

In an exciting month of October 2025, the Chemnitz region can expect a colorful theater program that is part of the celebratory occasion of being named European Capital of Culture. Chemnitz, Freiberg, Annaberg-Buchholz and Zwickau are the venues for numerous impressive performances that allow the city's cultural life to flourish.

The focus is particularly on the play “The Conspiracy of Fiesco in Genoa” by Friedrich Schiller, which will be performed on October 18th at 7:30 p.m. in the Spinnbau, Altchemnitzer Straße 27. Directed by Alexander Nerlich, the production takes the audience back to the time of the Venetian princes and shows Fiesco's power play with the rebels. The stage, equipped with high towers, is transformed into separate rooms and thus ensures an intense theater experience.

A diverse stage program

The Eduard von Winterstein Theater in Annaberg-Buchholz will be performing the play “Forever Young” on October 5th and October 19th at 6 p.m., which will take viewers into a future with senior residences for the aging ensemble. The actors' joy in playing brings the plot to life.

But visitors can also expect an enjoyable program in Zwickau and Plauen: on October 19th at 7:30 p.m. the story of “Ramayana” will be told there, in which Prince Rama wants to win back his kidnapped wife Sita. Meanwhile, Zwickau residents can go to the puppet theater on October 4th at 7:30 p.m. and enjoy “Spinnlein, Spiderlein an der Wand”, a poetic piece about perseverance and inner peace. The people of Plauen can look forward to the piece “Ramayana” on October 12th.

Another highlight is “Don Giovanni” by W.A. Mozart, which can be seen on October 11th at 7 p.m. in the Freiberg Theater. The production places particular emphasis on the thoughts and feelings of the protagonist and thus draws the audience deeply into the plot.

A cultural heritage for the future

These performances are not only part of the celebratory program, but are also linked to the long-term goal of Chemnitz as the Capital of Culture. The “Inside Outside Europe” project aims to unite the regional theaters in a common stage design and to make important topics visible that radiate far beyond the borders of Chemnitz and Saxony. The investments in this project are intended to contribute sustainably to the development of the industrial region, and the last Legacy Conference has already laid the foundation for continued progress to be made even after the title year of 2025.

The Cultural Capital of Chemnitz 2025 will set an example and bring people together. This is not least a concern that was discussed intensively at the last conference with participants from several cultural capitals. Sustainability and the European dimension are the focus here and should serve as guidelines for the coming years.

The series of theater performances in Chemnitz and the surrounding area will not only enrich cultural life, but also set the course for the positive development of the region. Let yourself be carried away by this diverse program and discover the cultural diversity that makes Chemnitz the European Capital of Culture!
