Zwickau celebrates 50 years of the FDGB cup victory: Croy and the historical drama
On June 14, 2025, FSV Zwickau will celebrate a very special anniversary: the 50th anniversary of the glorious FDGB Cup victory in 1975. Back then, at the World Youth Stadium in East Berlin, BSG Sachsenring won the cup with a thrilling final against Dynamo Dresden, which turned out to be the last major title in the club's history. In a game that was characterized by tough defense and clever counterattacks, Zwickau finally prevailed on penalties, led by their captain Jürgen Croy, a real local hero from Zwickau.
The final game started rather unspectacularly. Both teams felt each other out in the first half of the game, with Dresden having more possession of the ball, but reaching their limits in Zwickau's defense. In the 65th minute, Dynamo scored the lead through Heidler, who put the Zwickau team under pressure. But the answer didn't take long to arrive: just eight minutes later, Schykowski equalized for Zwickau. What followed was an exciting duel that went into extra time.
The decisive penalty shootout
No further goals were scored in extra time, making the duel a nail-biter of 11-yard penalties. Here Jürgen Croy managed to make a decisive appearance as goalkeeper for BSG Sachsenring. He parried the shots from Weber and Dörner, and ultimately it was Croy himself who scored the decisive penalty and thus secured the cup victory.
This victory was not only a cause for celebration for the fans, but also qualified BSG Sachsenring for the European Cup Winners' Cup, which put the club on a bigger stage.
Jürgen Croy: A Zwickau legend
Jürgen Croy's role in this triumph cannot be overstated. The goalkeeper, who was born in Zwickau on October 19, 1946, is considered the GDR national team's record player with 94 senior international matches and won a gold medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. Croy, who played for BSG Sachsenring until 1981, had an impressive career with 372 league games. As team captain from 1975 until the end of his career, he was not only active in sports, but also paved the way for numerous other young talents as a coach.
His successes in football are diverse. In addition to the cup victories in 1967 and 1975, Croy was also part of the GDR team that sensationally defeated the Federal Republic of Germany in 1974. His dedication and loyalty to Zwickau football are exemplary and have made him a true legend in his hometown.
For the fans of FSV Zwickau and for everyone who loves football in Zwickau, this historic day remains a venerable memory of an incredible victory and of the creativity of a club that never gave up despite all the challenges.
