Eckernförde imposes feeding ban for greedy seagulls from June 11th!

Eckernförde, Deutschland - The city of Eckernförde has taken measures to be able to counter a growing problem with seagulls. From June 11th, a ban on feeding for seagulls in the city center, at the harbor and on the main and south beach will come into force. Mayor Iris Ploog (SPD) is forced to introduce this regulation through numerous complaints from the population. The city reports that seagulls are increasingly looting garbage containers and even attacking guests at snack stands.

The problem with the seagulls does not only affect Eckernförde. Other coastal cities, such as Kiel and Warnemünde, have already issued bans, which are occupied by high fines. In Warnemünde, violations of the feeding ban can be punished with fines of up to 75 euros plus fees. In 2023, six administrative offenses have already been displayed.

reasons for the ban

The increase in the seaworthy population, especially the silver gull (Larus Argentatus), is attributed to an abundant food supply. Waste from fishing, dumps and sewage treatment plants offer the birds in urban areas of sufficient food resources. In Eckernförde, the Nature Conservation Association (NABU) supports the feeding ban and emphasizes that the seagulls can find enough food in the city.

In Schleswig-Holstein, a total of ten seagull species are at home, including the frequent laughing gulls, storm gulls and silver gull. It is important to emphasize that seagulls are under protection and lose their stocks of endangered species.

Feeding ban at an overview

Feeding of seagulls is not only prohibited in Eckernförde, but is also common practice in other Baltic Sea cities. Below is an overview of existing regulations:

Stadt feeding since fines
Eckernförde 11. June 2025 administrative offense
Warnemünde since an indefinite date up to 75 euros
Stralsund January 2021 up to 5000 euros
wismar 1. August 2019 unknown

violations of the feeding ban can result in unpleasant consequences for those affected. In Stralsund, for example, high fines can be imposed, which underlines the need to comply with the regulations. In addition, it is advisable to be aware of the food, since seagulls are known to steal snacks such as fish rolls, fries and ice cream.

Through these measures, the cities hope to regulate the behavior of the seagulls and to defuse the increasing conflict between birds and people at popular tourist resorts.
