Asylum policy in the crisis: the majority finally calls for a turn!

Asylum and migration policy in Germany is still in the crossfire of criticism. In view of the current figures of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), the health situation of refugees and the system itself is presented as problematic. In the first four months of 2025, over 110,000 asylum applications were decided, but the comprehensive protection rate fell to a new low at 18.22 percent. Only 20,059 applicants received protection, while 90.018 applications were rejected, as [Compact-Online] reported.

Another alarming element is the low number of deportations. Almost 60 percent of the 19,856 planned deportations were canceled. Only 8,103 people were actually returned to their country of origin. These figures ask questions about dealing with rejected asylum seekers, of whom almost 900,000 already live in Germany, and 300,000 of them are considered to be immediately liable for departure.

A look back at the asylum applications

In 2024 there were around 251,000 asylum applications in Germany, which corresponds to a decline of around 29 percent compared to the previous year. The most common applicants come from war and crisis areas, especially Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey. However, while in 2024 79,400 applicants from Syria and 36,200 came from Afghanistan, the protection rate for Turkish applicants remained behind expectations with 9.4 percent. In the previous year, this rate was still 13 percent, as [Proasyl] cited.

The debate about asylum policy has taken on speed, especially after the attacks in Mannheim and Solingen. Polls show that 77 percent of the population demand a turn in migration policy. There is a strong need for a new asylum policy, especially among the supporters of AfD and BSW. This also led to an increase in the AfD survey values, which achieved over 30 percent in the state elections in Thuringia and Saxony and 2025 in the Bundestag election.

political measures and reactions

The Federal Government reacts to stricter border controls and an increased number of deportations, especially to Afghanistan. At the same time, there were efforts to adopt a recovery law, but was rejected by the Union factions. In December 2023, the EU decided new asylum rules that aim to deduct people with small prospects of prospects at the external borders. Despite these measures, a large part of the municipalities sees the increases in the municipalities as exhausted, and many are calling for a comprehensive European solution to the asylum system, as [Statista] determines.

These developments make it clear that migration and asylum policy is one of the most pressing topics in German society. The Federal Government in particular is moving to demographic change and shortage of skilled workers to target specialists from non-EU countries. The specialist immigration law, which has been in force since March 2020, aims to make it easier for immigration and contain the challenges that arise from ongoing migration.
