Young British couple flees from 3,200 euro bill from cruise ship

A young couple from Great Britain, consisting of an 18-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, is currently causing a stir on Ibiza. The two were arrested after trying to flee from a cruise ship on which they had accumulated an enormous invoice of 3,196 euros. This sum mainly resulted from unpaid drinks and other purchases on board. When the staff of the ship asked them to pay the bill, they fled, such as T-Online reported.

The couple's hasty escape occurred last Wednesday at around 3 p.m. when the cruise ship was in the port of Ibiza. With their luggage in tow, they left the ship without setting the open expenses. The national police were informed immediately and was able to arrest the couple at Ibiza airport three hours later when they tried to take a flight. Now you have to answer for alleged fraud, as well as Mallorcamagazin reported.

The business behind cruises

cruises are very popular, with over 400 ships in use worldwide, each of which offers space for around 4,000 passengers. A particularly large ship, the "Icon of the Seas", can even promote up to 7,600 passengers. Nevertheless, cruise tourism has considerable discussions about the environmental and social effects of this industry. In this way, cruise ships consume environmentally harmful oils and can cause high CO2 emissions. A boat trip from Great Britain to New York results in about 9 tons of CO2 equivalents per passenger, which is a large balance compared to flights, such as Planet Knowledge shown.

Especially in ecologically sensitive areas, such as coral reefs, cruise ships can do great damage, although it is estimated that a single ship can destroy up to 200 square meters of reef surface. In addition, 20-40% of cruise tourists who do not go ashore when the ship arrives. This means that local economic advantages are often not realized to the extent that the cities mentioned benefit.

Today's episode around the couple in Ibiza throws a light on the dark side of the cruise industry, especially with regard to financial obligations for passengers and the associated fraudulent actions. While many enjoy relaxation and luxury at sea, the question remains how this form of traveling affects our environment and society in the long term.
