Sturm und tension: 90th North Sea week before Helgoland starts today!

Helgoland, Deutschland - The preparations for the 90th North Sea week have started. Marcus Boehlich has been responsible for the organization of this important event since 2014. The largest German university regatta traditionally takes place against the picturesque backdrop of Helgoland. This year the event marks a remarkable anniversary: the legendary regatta "Around Helgoland" is 100 years old. The North Sea Week attracts around 1,500 sailors every year who are looking for the fight against wind and waves.

The North Sea week includes feed -in regattas from Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Hooksiel and Hooge, which only start on Saturday due to the tidal conditions. The opening race, the "Garmin Cup Wedel-Cuxhaven", takes place on Friday, June 6th. In the event of water, the participants sail on the Elbe to Cuxhaven. Most sailing yachts are expected to reach the rock island in the evening, and the weather forecasts for the Pentecost days indicate uncomfortable conditions.

competitions and participants

For the races, 100 boats have confirmed their participation in different classes. The event also includes entry-level competitions such as the "Family Cruiser Cup". The highlight is the three -day Helgoland Offshore Triangle (H.O.T.), which can come up with a distance of around 350 to 400 nautical miles and qualifies for the renowned Rolex Fastnet Race.

On Saturday, the "Noblex Cup Cuxhaven-Helgoland" will be carried out over around 35 nautical miles, while some crews take part in a crossing from Cuxhaven to Helgoland at the "Glück Early Bird Series". The "Capitell Cup around Helgoland" follows on Pentecost Sunday, which leads a course of around 30 nautical miles around the island. 15 yachts will also take part in the DSV squadron, which also celebrates its premiere.

As part of the North Sea week, it is remarkable that the organizers do not cancel races. Instead, it is at the discretion of the participants whether they want to sail in these challenging conditions. In the past it has already occurred that only one participant had a participant under predominant weather conditions.

conclusion of the regatta

The North Sea week will continue on Whit Monday with the "Sebamed Cup Helgoländer eight" before the event ends on Tuesday, June 10th, with back regattas to Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven. Since its foundation by the Weser Yacht Club, the North German Regatta Verein, the Hamburg Yacht Club and the Niederelbe Sailor Association, the North Sea Week has developed into a significant event in sporty sailing and is attracting experts and hobby athletes alike.

This year there will also be a separate classic yachts (built in 1922-1970) at the "Noblex Cup Cuxhaven-Helgoland" and "Capitell Cup around Helgoland". Such innovations underline the dynamic development and adaptation of the regatta to modern requirements and sailing interests.
