30 years of the Eichsfeld Borderland Museum: A look into the past!

On November 13, 2025, a special event is coming up in Teistungen: The Grenzlandmuseum Eichsfeld is celebrating its 30th birthday. This anniversary is celebrated not only with a look at history, but also with a look into the future. The management and board of the sponsoring association want to review the development of the museum and present plans for the further development of the permanent exhibition and the educational offerings. Thuringian state parliament reports that greetings from prominent representatives, including the Thuringian state parliament president Dr. Thadäus König and State Secretary Prof. Dr. Joachim Schachtner, is expected.

The focus of the Grenzlandmuseum is on the history of the division of Germany and its dark chapters. Dr. Thadäus König emphasizes the central role of the museum in the German landscape of remembrance. This impressively shows how state surveillance and violence during the partition influenced people's lives and raises awareness of the partition's past.

Insight into the future

The museum, which has been providing information about the division and small border traffic in Eichsfeld since it was founded in 1995, has also had an education center on offer since 2000. The plans for the future are promising: from 2029, the program will be expanded to include “suitcase demonstrations” and democracy education projects. The museum would like to raise even greater awareness of people's concerns and offer a platform for education and exchange.

The celebrations will take place at Victor’s Residenz-Hotel Teistungenburg, Klosterweg 5-10, 37339 Teistungen. It will be exciting to see how guests react to the developments the museum has undergone over the last three decades. It is also noteworthy that the museum has become a symbol of cooperation between citizens, communities and institutions on both sides of the former border.

The role of the Borderland Museum in social discourse is therefore not only locally relevant, but also has greater significance. It provides space for reflection on the past and lessons for the future. A place that shows how far we have come and where we can still go to strengthen democracy and cohesion in society.
